Evens: History in a Dance

by Digital Art Studios

A look at the culture and traditions of the Evens, one of four native peoples on Kamchatka.  Shot on location in the Bystrinsky Region - traditional homeland of the Evens on Kamchatka - this film gives you the opportunity to learn about the tribe's history, their current living conditions, and their traditional culture.  Interviews with ethnographers, Evens themselves, and quotes from historical journals of Kamchatka's explorers, provide insight into the nature and mentality of this nomadic, reindeer herding people.

The center piece of this video is the native dance ensemble "Nurganek" which is based in the Even village of Anavgai.  They perform a series of traditional dances which are interspersed with explanations of traditional Even hunting practices, shamanism, and other key elements of tribal culture.  As important as what is explained in words, is the chance to see this small native culture - only 900 Evens remain on Kamchatka - in authentic surroundings.   The facial expressions of elders, the natural movements of the young dancers, and their interaction inside the family yurt are rare records of this reclusive people.

Film available in both PAL and NTSC formats.

From the Producer

A magnificent land of Evens is located in the central part of Kamchatka between the Kozyrevsky and Sredny mountain ranges.   Based on the creativity of the Even folk group "Nurganek", authors of the film tell the story of the history, culture, and traditions of the Even native settlement that lives in the Bystrinsky region of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
