| With a one-way
ticket, a 6-month visa, and a notion to live somewhere
in Russia that was "entirely different",
I moved to Kamchatka in the summer of 2000.
At that time I had virtually no knowledge of the
peninsula. I had not read any books about
the region, nor did I even search for information
on the internet. I knew that there were
lots of mountains and not many people - that was
enough for me.
Four years later, having lived nearly year round
on Kamchatka, I continue to be amazed by the fortune
of my uninformed choice. I've hiked, flown,
or driven to virtually all corners of the peninsula
and Kamchatka has not yet ceased to enthrall me.
The locals say Kamchatka is like a magnet and
from my experience they're correct: the more time
I spend here, the more it draws me in.
Avacha Bay Co.
was founded in 2003 for those who want to know
a little bit more about Kamchatka than is possible
to learn simply by reading web pages. Even
visiting the peninsula (which I highly encourage
you to do if you haven't already) is not sufficient
to acquire the information contained in the books,
videos, and maps offered here. Kamchatka
is large, diverse and not easily explored.
So, Discover More of Kamchatka, and when
I discover something new and informative about
Kamchatka that can be packed and shipped by mail:
you'll find it here.
Now that Kamchatka is open for the world to explore
it is my hope that the increased popularity of
this incredible territory leads to preservation
of its wonders and an improved standard of living
for the few people that call Kamchatka home.
