This is the Sea

by Cackle Productions

Created for avid sea kayakers and shot in a variety of locations around the world, from Greenland to Georgia to, yes, Kamchatka.

Although the emphasis of this film is sea kayaking in all its variety and not Kamchatka, we've included it here because a full third of the film (20 minutes) is dedicated to a kayaking trip along Kamchatka's Pacific coastline.

The Kamchatka segment of This is the Sea documents a 300 mile kayaking journey northward from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatksky to the mouth of the Kamchatka River at the village of Ust-Kamchatksk.  Defined by jutting peninsulas, cliffs, and volcanoes, this section of Kamchatka's coast is generally considered the peninsula's most beautiful.

Two western kayakers and a Russian guide paddle and camp unaided along the virtually uninhabited coastline.

This is the only film currently available which provides footage of Kamchatka's Pacific coastline.

Read an article by the film maker recounting her Kamchatka journey.

From the Producer

Cackle TV Productions brings you sea kayaking at it's best. Watch thrilling footage taken in crashing surf and roaring tidal races. Enjoy personal insights from the world's top sea paddlers and come on tour to fantastic locations including California, Georgia, Florida, the San Juan Islands, Greenland, Wales, and Russia!

Follow two women who took a novice Russian paddler on a challenging 650 km journey along the Kamchatka coast of Russia where they had to contend with 6 foot surf, the world's largest population of brown bears and being arrested by soldiers on a tank.

Justine Curgenven is a professional adventure film maker with credits on BBC & National Georgraphic.  She films with a specially designed camera system from her kayak, giving never-before-seen action shots.  See the paddlers' eyes bulge and hear the excited screams!
